This past weekend, I got the opportunity to go to a Cirque du Soleil show.
Cirque du Soleil [sirk-de-sol-ay] noun: 1. The collaboration between a circus and a Broadway show on steroids.
It is amazing/ jaw dropping /practically unbelievable what these people can do. They defy the boundaries of what the human body is capable of. They appear not human at all.
Its things like this which make me question what is real, what is fake, whether I'm dreaming, or maybe its a dream within a dream... within a dream. However, obviously in this case, its hard to doubt what these people are doing considering the fact that I saw it with my own two eyes.
But other than that, in life, specifically today's generation, we are so accustomed and immune to all the wonders of the world which technology has opened the doors to. This refers to many things, but today I'm just going to discuss to world of graphic design and digital media.
As i was looking at examples of print advertisements, i often found myself questioning the authenticity of a photograph. I couldn't tell whether it was reality or computer generated. Its hard to distinguish whether what you are looking at is real or fake, its kinda scary. Because i saw the show, i know that these stunts were real, but if some one were to show me pictures that reflected images such as these, i would say something like "Wow that a really good photoshop".
According to Wikipedia ( the most reliable reference know to man) " Before computers, photo manipulation was achieved by retouching with ink, paint, airbrushing, or hand manipulations like piercing the photos together in the dark room." In the late 1980's Photoshop was introduced and changed the world forever.
Prior to photoshop, the ad people were only able to show the hard raw portrait that is fair to say, an accurate reflection of the true product itself.but afterwords, we have just accepted the notions that what you see is hardly ever what you get. Maybe is a bigger or smaller size than what it appeared in the ad, maybe a different color, or maybe just a whole different composition all around.
Now, our perception of life is manipulated. We don't know whats created and whats reality. it makes you doubt reality. Is this a good thing or bad? from the eyes of an advertiser, this is a great advantage, here we have this ordinary everyday product and with Photoshop we are allowed to turn this into a mind blowing spectacle. There is no question on the creativity and the skill of these digital artists. They put life into a whole new perspective
Advertising has changed forever due to image manipulation. You can’t look through a magazine without seeing dozens of photoshopped ads (I dare you to try).
Think about what this means. To me, this says that companies that used to run text ads or had to hire a photographer to take their photos can now just pay someone to make their ad on a Mac or PC. Photoshop has changed advertising and business as a whole.
We are putting our self up to these high standards. in the ad perspective, will people continue to believe in the brand, or will everything be fake?
